Empower & Inspire, a conversation with Dana Zubari
For this year’s International Women’s Day, we decided to have a chat with Dana Zubari, athlete, brand owner and most of all an empowering and inspirational woman.
tinyOm: Can you talk a bit about yourself and your work as an athlete and a brand owner?
Dana: I am the co-founder of Trü Active as well as a co-founder of two non-profit organisations to encourage women here in Bahrain through cycling and running.
tinyOm: Were there obstacles in your career with respect to gender?
Dana: I could say that in regards to gender, because I own my own business, I haven’t had as many obstacles as someone who would have to work in a corporate setting, so I am blessed with that. I think at the end of the day we do get a lot of explaining from men because they just assumed that we don’t know what we’re doing which is something I had to deal with, but I wouldn’t call it an obstacle.
tinyOm: You work with women, empowering women through sports, fitness and healthy living; why do you think it’s so important to empower women?
Dana: I always feel that women supporting other women create a very healthy, non-toxic society. Keep in mind women are the spine of every family, every community; without women a lot of things wouldn’t happen. So keeping us women healthy, and keeping us women inspired by other women to look up to, you’re only bettering your own society.
tinyOm: What advice would you give to young women just starting their careers?
Dana: This is something that I really feel I wish someone told me when I was younger: pursue a career that you are passionate about. Because I pursued a career that I was told “this is what you have to do after you’re done with college”, and I hated going to work and I hated everything that I did until I switched careers into my passion which is sports, which is sportswear and that’s why now when I’m working I don’t feel like its work, I feel so much pleasure and it comes so easy to me. So do focus on things and really look into yourself and see what you really love to do and focus on that rather than whatever people tell you to do.
tinyOm: A suggestion to all the women out there
Dana: So for all the women out there: we always prioritise other people, we will always prioritise work or children or husband or someone else because we as women are givers, but you need to prioritise yourself, your health. And if you prioritise your health then you are prioritising your mental health, making you a better person in life, so don’t neglect that.
